FOLLOWING ITS ACQUISITION of watchmaker WIMM earlier this year, Google seems set to announce its first SmartWatch within weeks.
Projekti, koduar “Gem”, is said to be heavily based on Google Now functionality. In reality it probably will be an extension of the WIMM One smartwatch that is powered by Android, though in common with most smartwatches it requires a Bluetooth connection to an existing Android or Blackberry smartphone to work. It is not clear if this new device will work independently, perhaps using Google credentials to sync information.
Despite there having been no sightings of the new device, 9to5Android has wasted no time in creating a mock-up of the watch based on what it knows.
With the launch of Android 4.4 Kitkat and Google’s flagship Nexus 5 smartphone said to be days away, it could be that we will be getting an extra treat at the launch.
Market analysis firm Juniper Research said that it believes the wearable device sector is set to explode, with predictions of an $18bn market by 2019, and while much of the focus has been on Google Glass, smartwatches seem set to hit it big too.
Despite disappointments with many of the models released so far – remember the Sony Liveview? – it could only take one success to change people’s perceptions and desires for wrist based smart technology.
Veç kësaj, much of Google’s research into Google Glass might be used in its smartwatch, though with less likelihood of looking like a poser in a strange headset in the middle of Shoreditch High Street. m
