GADGET DESIGNER Apple has announced the iPad Mini 2, with the firm branding the device as the iPad Mini with Retina display.

Clearly looking to challenge Google’s new Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, the latest iPad Mini improves on Apple’s debut pint-sized tablet with a Retina display, the same found on the Macbook Air.

We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Apple’s iPad Mini 2 tablet. Keep this page bookmarked to keep on top of all of the latest iPad Mini 2 release date, price and specification rumours.

Specs
Apple’s second-generation iPad Mini’s main improvement is of course a Retina display, with the device touting a 7.9in 2048×1536 resolution display. The device clearly has been influenced by Apple’s latest iPhone 5S smartphone too, as the tablet features the same 64-bit A7 chip under the bonnet and the firm’s latest iOS 7 mobile operating system.

Beyond that, the tablet’s only real improvements are in the WiFi and storage departments, with Apple equipping the device with Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology for faster wireless connectivity, and adding a 128GB storage model to the lineup.

The rest of the specifications remain unchanged. This means that buyers will find the same dual 5MP and 1.2MP Facetime HD cameras, 4G LTE support, and 10 hour battery life as Apple’s debut 7.9in tablet. It features the same dimensions too, measuring 200x135x7.2mm.

Release date
Apple has yet to announce a release date for the iPad Mini with Retina display, instead saying vaguely that it will be available in “late November”. We’ll update this when we hear more.

Price
Apple’s second generation iPad Mini is slightly more expensive than the first generation model, no doubt thanks to the addition of a Retina display. For those after the WiFi-only model, expect to pay £319 for the 16GB model, and £399, £479 and £559 for the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models, respectively. For those after 4G LTE, these prices rise by £100 each. .

If you’re after the device on contract, operators EE, Three and Vodafone have been quick to announce that they will be selling the iPad Mini with Retina display. There’s no word from O2 yet, and tariff pricing is still to be revealed. µ
