A third study reported in The Independent this year looked at whether alcohol can boost women’s sex drives. The study showed that following moderate alcohol consumption, levels of testosterone increased in women, but not men. This might be evidence of alcohol increasing the libido of women via a temporary surge in the male sex hormone. Despite being reported in The Independent this year, the research in question appears to come from a study published in Nature site Alko (a large Finnish alcohol retailer) na 1994.

The research itself is a one-page report on an experimental study where men and women were given either an alcoholic beverage or a non-alcoholic juice, and hormone levels were measured (although it is not clear how). When controlling for contraceptive use and menstrual cycle (which affects hormone levels) mmanya ụba testosterone jiri ya tụnyere ihe placebo na ndị inyom, but not men.

E nwere ọtụtụ nke methodological ajụjụ a na-apụghị zara site n'ihe ọmụma dị a obere akụkọ – ka ndị sonyere mara ma ọ bụrụ na ha nọ na-enweta onye aṅụrụma ma ọ bụ placebo onunu? Na-akpali mmasị, ná mbipụta nke isiokwu dị na The Independent coincided na a pịa ntọhapụ maka a ọhụrụ vodka otu ụlọ ọrụ na-akpọ Alko plus. (Ọ bụ anya ma a ụlọ ọrụ na-mmekọ na Alko). Na pịa ntọhapụ, na vodka na-kpọmkwem iji na ndị inyom, with claims made regarding the capability of alcohol to increase female libido: “Hey Gals: Put New Meaning Into Your July 4th Fireworks; Alko-Plus Creates ‘Lust Vodka’ that it says Increases Female Sexual Desire”.

Reviewing these articles and the corresponding research studies has made me think about the issues involved in studying sex and alcohol and in reporting and interpreting research findings. There are many complex individual differences in the psychological and physiological factors that influence the response to both sex and alcohol. The association between sex and alcohol is dependent upon alcohol dosage, alcohol expectancy, and measurement of alcohol and sexual behaviour.

In terms of dose, e nwere ike ịbụ otu ezigbo ego nke mmanya ime ka ndị a enwe mmetụta dị mmekọahụ agụụ ma ọ bụ arụmọrụ. Ozugbo gara aga na fọrọ mmetụta o nwere ike na-adịghị mma. Nke a echiche na-akwado biphasic ọdịdị nke mmanya, na stimulant mmetụta dị ka ọbara na-aba n'anya ịta-abawanye, ma depressant mmetụta dị ka ọ na mbelata ọzọ.

Mmanya ndimmadu nwekwara mmetụta omume mmekọahụ n'oge mmenaanya. Nanị ikwere na mmanya na-aba n'anya na-abawanye mmekọahụ agụụ pụrụ iduga n'ezie mejụọ agụụ mmekọahụ n'oge mmenaanya. Expectancies banyere mmanya na oriri na-eme ihe a o nke research n'inyocha mmetụta nke mmanya na ihe ọ bụla omume. Ọ dị mkpa ka nnyocha na-ekpebi mmetụta nke ma ndị kpọmkwem pharmacological mmetụta na-atụ anya.

N'ikpeazụ, the way alcohol use is measured can impact on the association with sexual behaviour. The administration of alcohol in an experimental study versus self-report of alcohol use by drinkers is likely to yield different study findings. Ọzọkwa, it is very difficult to directly measure sexual behaviour. Most studies have to rely on self-report of sexual arousal and performance or use proxy measures such as cardiovascular and physiological function.

Accurate representation of research evidence on alcohol and sex may not yield a “sexy” headline. Otú ọ dị, clear and honest reporting of research findings and at least a link to the original published study should allow the reader to make up their own mind when faced with the scientific evidence.

Na nke a na-aba n'anya nwere ikike dịkwuo n'ike agha na ime anaghị dị ka ha abụ n'ụzọ kwụ ọtọ dị ka adade ke media. The njikọ dị n'etiti mmekọahụ na mmanya bụ a mgbagwoju onye na kasị mma mata isi okwu mgbe a doro anya na echiche ziri ezi picture dị, kama a "sexed-elu" akụkọ.
