2015: the year the fingerprint sensor stopped being a gimmick

Smartphone kev ruaj ntseg tsis muaj yuav tsum tau ib tug ua haujlwm hauv tsev ua tsaug rau zoo biometrics uas ua lawv cov hauj lwm thiab tau tawm ntawm koj txoj kev tsis muaj compromising koj cov ntaub ntawv

Tom qab ntawd tuaj lub tuabneeg sensor, thiab koj xav li cas: tiag tiag? Yog vim li cas? Muab nyob rau hauv ib tug pin tsis yog hais tias mob, Kuv yeej xav tau no? Tsis tau tam sim no koj tsis xav txog lub tuabneeg sensor, los yog tag nrho cov neeg vib nas this koj twb rua, vim hais tias koj siv tag nrho nws lub sij hawm. 2015 yog lub xyoo tuabneeg scanners tuaj ntawm lub hnub nyoog.

Ib tug ob peb xyoos dhau los, rau account koj lub xov tooj yog ib tug multi-kais yi - siv ib tug ntev pin los yog lo lus zais - txhua txhua lub sij hawm koj npo mus tsaus ntuj nti. Nws yog li ntawd tsho hais tias muaj ntau cia li tsis looj koov, tawm hauv lub handset thiab txhua yam rau nws, lam tau lam ua rau ib tug dua criminal. Mus dov ntiv tes scanners tau tuaj cawm peb los ntawm kev txom txhob xauv lub npau suav phem, thiab cov neeg ua tau txawv txawv sib tham nrog peb cov niam, thaum ua kom peb cov xov tooj ruaj ntseg. Tiam sis peb yuav tsum tsis txhob yuav ras lawv nyob nraum ua pov thawj thiaj li pab tau.

Cov yiv tes tau nyob rau hauv kev siv rau kev qhia kom paub lub hom phiaj raws li thaum ntxov raws li 1858, raws li ib txoj kev xyuas kos npe rau cov ntawv cog lus. Txij thaum ntawd los cov qauv ntawm daim tawv nqaij ridges tau ib tug yooj yooj yim thiab siv tau txoj kev ntawm kev txheeb xyuas ib tug neeg uas muaj ib tug 98.6% raug rau ib tug ntiv tes, raws li cov ntaub ntawv los ntawm lub US National Institute of Standards thiab Technology.

Consumer tuabneeg scanners tau nyob ib ncig ntawm lub xeem 10 xyoo, nquag nruab computers raws li ib tug ruaj ntseg ntaus ntawv. Tab sis scanners uas yuam tus neeg siv yuav los so lawv cov ntiv tes hla ib sensor muaj pov thawj tau qeeb thiab tsis muaj tseeb txaus kom paub txog ib tug neeg 100% ntawm lub sij hawm rau cov thawj mus.

Lawv gimmicks. Ib yam dab tsi mus muag ib tug smartphone los yog lub computer uas tsis ntxiv tiag tiag nqi mus rau lub neej ntawm feem ntau cov neeg. Lawv cia li ntxiv siab es tsis txhob muaj nws.

Kua kov ID, ib tug kov-raws li tuabneeg sensor kos nyob rau hauv lub 2013 iPhone 5’s home button, was the first to be introduced with technology good enough to reliably identify an owner. It was was faster than entering a pin and you didn’t need to swipe, just place a finger on the home button for a second or so.

Txij thaum 2013 fingerprint sensors have improved and diversified. Last year saw serious rivals from Samsung thiab Huawei. xyoo no, almost every flagship phone launched with a good fingerprint sensor, while even some mid-range and lower-cost devices came equipped with them.

Today they appear on the front andback of the device and even under the power button on the side in Sony’s case. They generally recognise fingerprints with around a 98% accuracy and in under one second, which makes them power-on and unlock with one touch. No gimmicks, just a piece of security seamlessly integrated into the modern smartphone experience.

Apple set the goal posts, but the majority of Android users have two little known firms to thank for this easy of use upgrade: the Swedish companies Fingerprint Cards AB and Precise Biometrics, one of which makes the hardware and the other the software.

In the case of Android and iOS, fingerprints are stored locally and not sent away to a serveran important security step as, unlike a password or username, you cannot change your fingerprint if it is stolen.

Once you have used a good fingerprint sensor, it’s surprisingly difficult to go back to having to tap in a pin or swipe a pattern to unlock your phone. And that is just the start. Most smartphones with fingerprint sensors also allow users to secure other parts of the phone with their digits, effectively alleviating the problem of trying to remember or enter a long, secure password for making app purchases, Piv txwv.

If you’re launching a smartphone in 2016 without a fingerprint sensor, you might as well be leaving out the selfie camera and the touch screen too.

The immediate next step for fingerprint scanners is likely to be on-screen scanning. No button, no sensor, just a touchscreen that recognises who’s touching it. Science-fiction movies have been trying to show how it works for years, whether it ever will remains to be seen.

And fingerprints are just the start of the promised biometric surge into technology. Iris scanners, hand-vein scanners, heart rhythm monitoring and various other relatively unique aspects of the human body are all contenders to be the next big thing.
