EARLY ADOPTERS of Apple’s flagship iPhone 5S smartphone might be wondering whether their device is in fact running Microsoft Windows, with some users reporting a ‘Blue Screen of Death’ (BSOD).
The Verge reports that a handful of users have been expericienced the problem, which sees the iPhone 5S displaying a BSOD then randomly rebooting. This issue, normally associated with Microsoft’s Windows PC operating system, reportedly occurs when users are switching between heavy apps, in particular Apple’s own iWork suite.
Users have taken to Apple’s support forum to bemoan the problem. One user moaned, “I just got the new Iphone 5s in slate grey. When using my phone going in and out of apps, my phones screen will suddenly turn solid blue for about [two] seconds then the apple logo will appear and it restarts my phone.”
Another added, “I’m getting something like this too, with my iPhone 5s 64GB which I bought on Saturday. I’ve also found that if I open a document in Numbers, then press the power button, the phone seems to power itself off almost instantly instead of just going to sleep.”
There doesn’t seem to be a fix yet, but one user seems to have found a workaround. Reportedly turning off the Pages, Keynote and Numbers apps in iCloud settings should resolve the problem.
It appears that users of other devices running iOS 7, such as the iPhone 5C and older iPhone handsets, are not experiencing the problem, with the BSOD reportedly affecting only Apple’s iPhone 5S flagship smartphone.
Apple’s iPhone 5S has had a somewhat shaky launch. As well as this apparent blue screen issue, users have also been reporting problems with the handset’s new motion sensor, which is apparently “a few degrees off.” Software problems have also been cropping up since the handset’s launch, such as the lockscreen bypass and issues with the handset’s battery.
